Yokozuna Rikishi Memorial Monument was erected in 1900 by the 12th yokozuna Jinmaku Kyugoro as a monument to honor all of the past yokozuna. Set on the grounds of Tomioka Hachiman Shrine, the granite block is approximately 3.5 meters tall and 3 meters thick and weighs in at 20 tons. Yokozuna names starting with Akashi Shiganosuke are carved on the back of the monument.
When a New yokozuna is born, the name ceremony will be held under the witness of the Sumo Association, and the ring of the new yokozuna will be dedicated. Besides, the names of supporters such as Itō Hirobumi, Yamagata Aritomo and Ōkuma Shigenobu are also carved on both sides of the monument, means that it was erected with support from various fields.
